THE HUMANITARIAN SHIELD
This is a book aimed at healthcare workers. It's not about heroes or infallibility, but about human systems operating under constant pressure. It focuses on real people, with real limitations, trying to make good decisions in contexts that are, in fact, imperfect.

“Throughout more than 25 years of dedication and leadership within the United Nations system, I believed I had already seen virtually every possible approach to the protection of our personnel. Even so, this book surprised me. I had never encountered a work capable of capturing with such precision the human complexity that underpins field operations. The greatest compliment I can give to a work like this is that it not only makes sense for the humanitarian sector — it fills a gap that has long been felt.”
Joaquín González-Alemán
UNICEF Representative in Brazil

“Tiago’s book fulfills a major gap in the humanitarian field. Drawing on his extensive field experience, he skillfully bridges humanitarian assistance and security. Moreover, he offers a pragmatic perspective while remaining deeply sensitive to mental health, approaching it beyond the overly individualizing lens so common in psychology. I strongly and wholeheartedly recommend this book, which challenges us, broadens our perspectives, and pushes us to cross the boundaries of knowledge and professional practice.”
Dr. Alexandre Mourão
Psychologist, PhD, former Stress Counsellor for the United Nations in Brazil, and Professor at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA)

“This work offers valuable lessons that go far beyond the humanitarian environment. Private-sector organizations, especially those operating within critical infrastructure, sensitive supply chains, or high-risk contexts, will find reflections here that are directly applicable to their own realities. The book is an invitation to reflection and encourages a necessary reexamination of assumptions that are often accepted without proper questioning — particularly by those working in the field of security.”
